Demi Lovato made a powerful statement about mental health as the first celebrity speaker at the Democratic National Convention on Monday night (July 25).

Speaking in front of a full house at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, the 23-year-old spoke about the stigma surrounding mental health issues, something she’s experienced firsthand.

“Like millions of Americans, I am living with mental illness. But I’m lucky. I had the resources and support to get treatment at a top facility,” Demi said. “Unfortunately, too many Americans from all walks of life don’t get help, either because they fear the stigma or cannot afford treatment.”

Lovato — who’s long been vocal about living with bipolar disorder and about her past addiction to drugs and alcohol — urged politicians to support laws that will give Americans better access to health care.

“This is not about politics, it’s simply the right thing to do,” she said. “I stand here today as proof that you can live a normal and empowered life with mental illness.”

She then threw her support to presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, saying, “I’m proud to support a presidential candidate who will fight to ensure all people living with mental health conditions get the care they need to lead fulfilling lives. That candidate is Hillary Clinton. Let’s make her the next president of the United States of America.”

Ending her appearance on one hell of a strong note, Lovato then transitioned into her sassy self-empowerment anthem “Confident,” earning a well-deserved standing ovation from the crowd.

After her performance, Clinton tweeted her thanks for Lovato's appearance, writing, “Thank you, @ddlovato, for describing your experience dealing with mental illness with such courage.”
