The Weeknd Is Making A Play For Drake’s Global Streaming Champion Status

How has ‘Starboy’ one-upped ‘Views’ on Spotify?

Now that Starboy is out and its first-week numbers are in, it’s official: The Weeknd has bounced Drake from the top spot on one streaming platform, as his latest album has trounced the mighty Views in the days following its November 25 drop.

While Drake is still the most-streamed artist of 2016 on Spotify, Billboard reports that Starboy hit the 223 million mark in its first week of streaming on the platform, thus clinching the best debut week performance on the service and additionally breaking the record for most streams in a 24-hour period with a cool 40 million. This also makes him the top artist on Spotify when it comes to monthly streams.

Keep in mind that Views premiered as an Apple Music exclusive to a whopping 245 million streams, but still: It’s huge that The Weeknd is turning out these numbers on Spotify and potentially shaking things up just before the end of the year as far as AOTY contenders are concerned.

Whether or not Starboy shapes up to give Views a run for its money remains to be seen: The album’s chart status is still TBD, but Billboard notes that it could join the company of top-ranker Views, Beyoncé’s Lemonade, and others as one of the strongest releases of 2016.
