Jesse Williams Fired Up The Internet With His Badass BET Awards Speech

‘Just because we're magic doesn't mean we're not real’

When Grey's Anatomy actor and activist Jesse Williams took the stage at Sunday night's (June 26) BET Awards to accept the 2016 BET Humanitarian Award, he floored his audience with a powerful speech about civil rights and equality. [Note: BET and MTV News are both owned by Viacom.]

"This award, this is not for me," he began. "This is for the real organizers all over the country — the activists, the civil rights attorneys, the struggling parents, the families, the teachers, the students — that are realizing that a system built to divide and impoverish and destroy us cannot stand if we do."

He went on to address the Black Lives Matter movement ("police somehow manage to de-escalate, disarm, and not kill white people every day"), police brutality, equality ("freedom is somehow always conditional here"), and appropriation ("trying us on like costumes"). And the internet, including celebs like Orange Is the New Black's Uzo Aduba, loved every second of his refreshingly honest and zero-bullshit statements.
