Ariana Grande's VMA Style Transformation: Goodbye Florals, Hello Leather

Roses are red but leather is better

We're frequently floored by how far some celebs will go from their first Video Music Awards appearance, but in the case of Ariana Grande, it's not only how much her ~look~ has changed — it's how quickly she managed to pull it off.

We begin our journey in 2013, when Ariana first stepped foot on a VMA red carpet.

Ariana's debut was a flouncy floral number from Kenley Collins, very in line with the '50s aesthetic she had going on at the time. Her hair was an early iteration of the trademark ponytail we've become increasingly familiar with.

For her pre-show performance, she changed into a very sparkly and very satin-y dress that wouldn't be out of place in, say, an ice rink.

A year later, Ariana rolled up to the same awards show with a very different vibe — goodbye florals, hello leather. Leather dress, leather thigh-high boots, leather errything.

For her first performance — yes, there were multiple — she wore sparkles again, though she swapped the ice skater-y silhouette for something more modern. She completed the look with matching sparkly boots because neutral pumps would no longer do.

Her second performance outfit was equally form-fitting, though definitely not as sparkly. Her new look required a new pair of thigh-high boots, obviously.

For her final look of the evening, Ari brought the sparkles back, kept the last pair of boots, and accessorized with a Moonman.

Now it's two years later, Ariana is returning to the VMAs and the VMA stage and, well, we cannot wait to see what she wears.

Tune in to the 2016 VMAs, live from New York on Sunday, August 28, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
