This was Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s first red carpet appearance as a couple

Facebook launched, Ashlee Simpson was caught lip-synching on "SNL," and "Friends" came to an end: 2004 was a monumental year, to say the least.

It was also the year Prince William and Kate Middleton went public with their romance.

Another royal couple who made their debut? A then 23-year-old Beyoncé and 35-year-old Jay-Z stepped off a yacht into the 2004 MTV VMAs, held in Miami, for their first red carpet appearance together.

While Jay-Z made headlines for his head-to-toe white suit and fedora, all eyes were on Beyoncé's little gold number and blonde curls. The singer won the award for Best Female Video with "Naughty Girl," and gave Jay-Z a shout-out during her speech saying, "What up, Jay?" -- ultimately confirming their romance after staying quiet for years.

Fifteen years later and the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards are set to take place on Monday, August 26 with Taylor Swift headlining the show. Swift is tied with Ariana Grande for the most nominations this year, while Missy Elliott will be honored with the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award.
