NBC pokes fun at its own star-studded talent roster during 2019 Upfronts

Updated

NBC took aim at its own talent roster at its 2019 Upfront, but everyone was in on the joke — probably.

"Saturday Night Live" cast members performed a "Family Feud" sketch parodying talent from across NBC properties, with the biggest laughs going toward Chris Redd's impression of "This Is Us" star Sterling K. Brown. Other stars to get skewered were "Morning Joe" co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski as well as "World of Dance" judge Jennifer Lopez.

The faux-"Feud" included Pete Davidson's deadpan impression of "Mr. Robot" star Rami Malek, who appeared onstage just a few minutes later to introduce a different segment.

"I'm so happy to be here," Malek said in his signature emotionless voice. When the audience laughed, he seemed genuinely confused: "Why is that funny?"

"Late Night" host Seth Meyers also referenced Malek in his short stand-up set, joking that even an Oscar win couldn't get him out of presenting at the Upfronts.

Meyers then offered his congratulations to "Today" show alum Kathie Lee Gifford, cracking, "Fun fact, she's the first person to leave the 'Today' show willingly."

He continued, "The motto of ‘The Today Show’ used to be, 'The Today Show,’ security will show you out.'"

Several of Gifford's former "Today" colleagues appeared onstage, as did a slew of other famous faces: Three Kardashians (Kourtney, Khloe and Kendall Jenner) were in tow along with Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Jimmy Fallon and Luis Fonsi performed a medley of Latin hits in celebration of Telemundo. A standing ovation went to 13 female Olympic gold medalists, including Lindsey Vonn, Missy Franklin and Mary Lou Retton, who all took the stage together.

The Upfronts also allowed the network to share a few new details about its upcoming streaming service, which will house new content as well as fan-favorites like "The Office," which NBC said is currently Netflix's No. 1 show. Murmurs went through the crowd when exec Linda Yaccarino said the platform, unlike other streaming services, will be free.
