Popeyes and Chick-fil-A have created an epic chicken sandwich war on Twitter

Move over beef, chicken is the new meat causing a stir in town.

Earlier this week, Popeye's chicken and Chick-fil-A ignited a Twitter feud that has since sent social media into a complete frenzy.

Popeye's, a chain of New Orleans-inspired fried chicken fast-food restaurants, announced on the platform that they were adding a new chicken sandwich to the menu.

And in true clap-back fashion, Chick-fil-A posted a cryptic subtweet on their Twitter page, thus launching the Great Chicken War of 2019.

The spicy exchange pitted two of consumers' favorite food chains against one another sparking the debate: which chain has the better chicken sandwich. While many fans stayed loyal to Chick-fil-A, Popeye's latest addition to its menu converted quite a few chicken sandwich lovers.

In a little less than two weeks since its announcement, the demand for the Popeye's sandwich has been so great that select locations have been selling out of the item.

It is still up for debate which chain has the best chicken sandwich, but Shake Shack and Wendy's have also tossed their respective hats in the ring.

More to come on AOL's final verdict.
