These are America’s top 5 wealthiest celebrities

When you think of celebrities, "fame and fortune" is usually what comes to mind -- and for this handful of them, they're at the top of that list. According to Forbes, these top five wealthiest celebrities in the United States boast a combined fortune of $15.4 billion.

First up is the richest of them all, George Lucas, with a net worth of $5.4 billion. The "Star Wars" creator credits his success largely to the money he pocketed from selling his Lucasfilm production company to Disney in 2012 for $4.1 billion.

Second on the list is Steven Spielberg at a net worth of $3.7 billion. The American film director, screenwriter, producer, video game designer and studio entrepreneur has grossed more than $10 billion for his 33 films. Some of the most popular include "Jurassic Park," "E.T." and "Jaws."

After that comes Oprah Winfrey with a sum of $2.8 billion. The beloved media mogul runs a media empire, including the O.W.N. TV network, Oprah.com, and 'O' Magazine. Aside from her media empire, her stock in Weight Watchers is worth over $400 million on its own.

In fourth place comes Michael Jordan with a fortune of $1.7 billion. His career earnings stand at $1.85 billion, according to Forbes, making him the highest-paid athlete of all time. His cumulative net worth is boosted by Nike's Jordan shoe and apparel brand as well as a 90 percent stake in the $800 million Charlotte Hornets.

Both Kylie Jenner and Jay-Z are tied for fifth on the list of the wealthiest celebrities. At a net worth of $900 million, Jenner was controversially granted the title "youngest self-made woman in America" by Forbes. Jenner owns 100 percent of her $900 Kylie Cosmetics company and adds to her fortune through plenty of endorsement deals that she advertises to her 168 million social media followers.

“I didn’t expect anything. I did not foresee the future,” says Jenner to Forbes. "But [the recognition] feels really good. That’s a nice pat on the back.”

Jay-Z has made many lucrative investments that have deemed him the richest musician on the list, one of them being his $600 million Tidal streaming service and a stake in the $2.4 billion Brooklyn Nets.

"[Tidal] was the greatest trick in music that people ever pulled off, to convince artists that you can't be an artist and make money," Jay-Z told Forbes in 2010, foreshadowing the success of his self-made businesses.
