“She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead,” a statement released by her family said in part.

McGrath was best known for playing Bob Johnson, a friendly neighbor on the original Sesame Street. His family confirmed his death on December 4. He was 90.

Singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and member of the legendary band Fleetwood Mac, McVie died on November 30 following a brief illness.

“She was truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure,” members of Fleetwood Mac shared after McVie’s death was announced. “She was the best musician anyone could have in their band and the best friend anyone could have in their life. We were so lucky to have a life with her. Individually and together, we cherished Christine deeply and are thankful for the amazing memories we have. She will be so very missed.”

Smith said, “It is with profound sadness that on behalf of her family I announce the passing of Irene Cara. The Academy Award-winning actress, singer, songwriter and producer passed away in her Florida home.”

His agent, Justine Hunt, confirmed the news of the actor’s death to TMZ on November 20. “Please respect the privacy of his family and friends during this horrible time as we come to terms with the loss of such a wonderful human being,” Hunt told TMZ. “He loved his family, friends, and fans very much. He will truly be missed.”

Pop star Aaron Carter‘s death was one of the most shocking celebrity deaths of 2022 because the singer was just 34. As Mamas Uncut reported at the time Carter died on November 5 with a rep for the artist confirming it without offering a cause of death. We do know that Carter was found unresponsive in his bathtub but no cause of death has been made public. According to his family, plans were in place to have Carter’s remains cremated.

Pioneering country music legend, Patrick Haggerty, the voice and heart behind Lavender Country passed away on October 31 at the age of 78. His death followed a stroke a few weeks prior. Haggerty’s Lavender Country album, released in 1973, was the first gay-themed country album.

Takeoff, a member of the trio Migos, was murdered in Houston, Texas on November 1. He was the victim of a gunshot wound that killed him in the parking lot of a local bowling alley. The rapper was only 28 at the time of his death. Again, this was another one of the most shocking deaths of the year as this bright star had so much more of his artistry to share with the world.

Peligro (Darren Henley) passed away in his Los Angeles home yesterday, October 28th,” a post for the Instagram account of the band shared on October 29. “Police on the scene stated that he died from trauma to the head caused by an accidental fall.” He was 63 at the time of his death.

Most know him from his mega-hit “Great Balls of Fire.” TMZ was the first to report his death and it was confirmed two days later.

Queer comedy legend, Leslie Jordan, known for his work on Will & Grace and The Help, died on October 24 after crashing his car in Los Angles, Mamas Uncut reported at the time.

“The world is definitely a much darker place today without the love and light of Leslie Jordan,” a rep for Jordan wrote shortly after Jordan’s passing.

Her family confirmed the news in a statement to the Associated Press, saying: “Our precious mom, Loretta Lynn, passed away peacefully this morning, October 4th, in her sleep at home in her beloved ranch in Hurricane Mills.” A memorial service will be announced at a later date. We really lost one of the GOATs of country music. RIP.

Coolio’s manager, Jarez Posey, told Rolling Stone that the Grammy winner’s passing was caused by cardiac arrest, adding, “As far as what I know now is that he was at a friend’s house and was in his bathroom.” 

Robert Cormier

Heartland's Robert Cormier Suddenly Dies At Age 33

Robert Cormier, who played Finn Cotter in the Heartland series, died at just 33 years old. The actor passed away on September 23, per his obituary. And while a cause of death was not provided in the obituary, Cormier’s sister Stephanie told The Hollywood Reporter that he died in a hospital in Etobicoke, Ontario, due to injuries sustained in a fall.

The One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest star died on September 23. She was 88. Starring alongside Jack Nicholson in the film, Fletcher’s solid performance earned her an Academy Award.

Fletcher’s agent, David Schaul, confirmed to Deadline that the actress had passed away in her sleep at her farmhouse in Montdurausse, France.

The celebrated director died at age 91 by assisted suicide in Rolle, Switzerland. Godard’s legal adviser, Patrick Jeanneret, told The New York Times on September 13, that the filmmaker “decided with a great lucidity, as he had all his life, to say, ‘Now, it’s enough.'”

Godard was the mastermind behind some of the most important films in the French New Wave movement including Breathless, Masculine Feminine, and Weekend.

The up-and-coming country artist was found dead at age 32 on August 29. The “Sometimes” singer’s passing was confirmed by his friend Matt Kinman, who was with Bell when he disappeared in Tucson a week before the musician was found. The performer “ran off” after Kinman grabbed a bite to eat.

Beverly Hills, 90210 alum, Denise Dowse died at 64 after being hospitalized for meningitis, which left her in a coma.

It is with a very heavy heart that I inform everyone that my sister, Denise Dowse, has gone forward to meet our family in eternal life,” the late actress’ sister, Tracey Dowse, shared via Instagram on August 13. “Denise Yvonne Dowse was the most amazing sister, a consummate, illustrious actress, mentor, and director. She was my very best friend and final family member […] Denise loved all of you. I know that she is watching over us with all the love she has. I ask for privacy and your continued prayers.”

The Six Days Seven Nights actor died at age 53 on August 12.

“Today we lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend,” a rep for Heche said in a release. “Anne will be deeply missed but she lives on through her beautiful sons, her iconic body of work, and her passionate advocacy. Her bravery for always standing in her truth, spreading her message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact.”

As Mamas Uncut reported, Heche’s death came after she was in a car crash earlier that month that left her in a coma.

Olivia Newton-John

Australian pop icon and star of Grease, Olivia Newton-John died on August 8 after a 30-year battle with metastatic breast cancer, husband John Easterling confirmed. She was 73. The Grammy-winner is survived by her daughter, singer Chloe Lattanzi, who she shared with ex-husband Matt Lattanzi.

Magnum P.I. actor, Roger E. Mosley, died on August 7, his daughter Ch-a Mosley confirmed on Facebook. He was 83.

“He was surrounded by family as he transcended peacefully. We could never mourn such an amazing man. He would HATE any crying done in his name,” his daughter wrote. “It is time to celebrate the legacy he left for us all. I love you, daddy. You loved me too. My heart is heavy but I am strong. I will care for mommy, your love of almost 60 years. You raised me well and she is in good hands. Rest easy.”

It was announced on Tuesday, August 2, via the official Twitter account for the Los Angeles Dodgers that the longtime broadcaster, Vin Scully, had died at the age of 94. 

“He was the voice of the Dodgers, and so much more. He was their conscience, their poet laureate, capturing their beauty and chronicling their glory from Jackie Robinson to Sandy KoufaxKirk Gibson to Clayton Kershaw,” the team said in a statement. “Vin Scully was the heartbeat of the Dodgers – and in so many ways, the heartbeat of all of Los Angeles.”

One of the most legendary basketball players of all time, Bill Russell, passed away at the age of 88 on July 31. Russell during his time with the Celtics won 11 championships with his coach Red Auerbach calling him “the single most devastating force in the history of the game.” His final two championships came while he was a coach.

Star Trek actress, Nichelle Nichols, known for playing Uhura and her groundbreaking depiction of television’s first interracial kiss, died at age 89 on July 30, her son Kyle Johnson confirmed.  

“I regret to inform you that a great light in the firmament no longer shines for us as it has for so many years,” a July 31 post on Nichols’ Facebook page announced. “Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration. Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.” 

Paul Sorvino

Paul Sorvino, star of Goodfellas, died on July 25 at age 83, the late actor and director’s wife, Dee Dee Sorvino, said in a statement at the time.

“Our hearts are broken, there will never be another Paul Sorvino, he was the love of my life and one of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen and stage,” she said.

Shonka Dukureh, the Elvis actress, who portrayed Big Mama Thornton in the 2022 biopic, the musician who originally recorded “Hound Dog,” was found dead in her Nashville apartment less than one month after the film’s June release.

“No foul play is evident in today’s death of actress Shonka Dukureh, 44, who portrayed Big Mama Thornton in this year’s Elvis movie,” the official Metro Nashville PD tweeted on July 21. “Dukureh, a Fisk graduate, was found dead in the bedroom of her Kothe Way apt that she shared with her 2 young children.”

The former NASCAR driver, Bobby East, died at age 37 after being fatally stabbed at a gas station on July 13.

The Westminster Police Department responded to reports of violence at the local 76 gas station at approximately 5:51 p.m. In the press release from police, East was reportedly “found on the ground suffering from a serious stab wound to the chest area.”

Ivana Trump, the Czech-American ex-wife of former president Donald Trump died on July 14 at age 73. Paramedics were called to her Upper East Side home after a report of cardiac arrest, but her official cause of death has not yet been confirmed. 

Ivana, who shared daughter Ivanka and sons Eric and Don Jr. with Donald, was born Ivana Marie Zelníčková. She married the real estate mogul in 1977 and the two divorced in 1992, although she kept her ex-husband’s surname.

Tony Sirico, the New York native, best known for playing Tony Soprano’s associate Peter Paul “Paulie Walnuts” Gualtieri on The Sopranos, died on July 8 at the age of 79. “He was as tough, as loyal and as big hearted as anyone I’ve ever known,” his former costar Michael Imperioli wrote via Instagram at the time. “I was at his side through so much: through good times and bad. But mostly good. And we had a lot of laughs. … I will miss him forever. He is truly irreplaceable.” Sirico is survived by his two children.

He is survived by his five children: daughter Tara and sons Scott Caan, Alexander, James and Jacob.

The As the World Turns star, Marnie Schulenburg, died on May 17 after a two-year battle with breast cancer. “Please don’t say Marnie lost her battle to cancer. It’s simply not true. I watched her kick cancer’s ass everyday since diagnosis,” Schulenburg’s husband, Zack Robidas, wrote via Facebook. “She is incredible. We chose to attack her diagnosis with blind optimism. We only talked about the future and continued moving forward. I don’t know if this was right but it’s all we knew how to do.”

The former soap star is survived by Robidas and their 2-year-old daughter, Coda.

Naomi Judd

The country singer, Naomi Judd, died at age 76, her daughters confirmed in a statement on April 30.

“Today we sisters experienced a tragedy,” Wynonna Judd and Ashley Judd said in a joint message shared via Twitter. “We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness. We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that as we loved her, she was loved by her public. We are in unknown territory.”

Gilbert Gottfried

The beloved comedian, Gilbert Gottfried, best known for his stand-up routines and voicing the parrot Iago in Aladdin, died at age 67 on April 12. He passed away “from Recurrent Ventricular Tachycardia due to Myotonic Dystrophy type II,” his publicist and friend Glenn Schwartz.

Gottfried’s death was initially announced by his family via his Twitter account.

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness,” the family shared at the time. “In addition to being [one of] the most iconic voices in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor.”

The Seinfeld alum and Toy Story voice actress, Estelle Harris, died of natural causes at age 93.

“It is with the greatest remorse and sadness to announce that Estelle Harris has passed on this evening at 6:25 p.m.,” her son Glen Harris said in a statement on April 2. “Her kindness, passion, sensitivity, humor, empathy and love were practically unrivaled, and she will be terribly missed by all those who knew her. Fashion icon André Leon Talley was reported dead on January 18. He was 73. He was famed for his own personal style, writing, and for being a powerful creative director for Vogue. One of the most influential voices in fashion, he was remembered by his close friend Anna Wintour.

“Friendship with him meant being part of his erudite, gilded, and fiercely self-created existence; of being in the orbit of someone who had the incredible gift, one amplified by his immense charm, of always being able to joyfully turn the volume of life up—way, way up,” Wintour wrote in an essay published shortly after his death.

A member of the 1960s girl group The Dixie Cups, Rosa Lee Hawkins died at the age of 76, Pitchfork reported on Jan. 17. She was the youngest member of the girl group that released the megahit “Going to the Chapel.” She died of complications following surgery in Tampa, Florida.

Jordan Cashmyer, star of MTV’s 16 and Pregnant, died at the age of 26. As Mamas Uncut reported, the tv personality’s death was announced on January 15. Her cause of death has yet to be released. One of the celebrity deaths of 2022 that no one saw coming, Cashmyer’s fans were especially shocked.

“Poor thing,” one fan wrote on Instagram. “She has 2 daughters and this is just a terrible tragedy. I hope her babies will have a good life…sending love and prayers to family and friends.”

Youtuber Adalia Rose Williams who lived with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome died on Jan. 12. She was just 15. Again, this is another one of the celebrity deaths that represents a life taken too soon.

“She is no longer in pain and is now dancing away to all the music she loves,” an Instagram post announcing her death said. “I really wish this wasn’t our reality but unfortunately it is.”

At 78, Ronnie Spector passed away following a battle with cancer. Her death was announced on Jan. 12. She was the lead singer for the trailblazing girl group The Ronettes.

“Our beloved earth angel, Ronnie, peacefully left this world today after a brief battle with cancer,” a statement released by her family said. “She was with family and in the arms of her husband, Jonathan.”

Tampa Bay Ray bullpen catcher, Jean Ramirez, tragically passed away on Monday, Jan. 10, At-the-Buzzer reported. The Rays player was just 28. The family announced the cause of death as suicide and released the following statement:

“The loss of our son has been the most excruciating experience we have lived,” the Ramirez family wrote. “Unfortunately, we sometimes don’t see the signs. Struggling in silence is not OK. It is our commitment to honor our son’s life by helping other families. No parent should have to endure the loss of their child.”

Full House star Bob Saget was found deceased in a hotel room on January 9 following a performance in Jacksonville, Florida, the night before. He was 65.

“We are devastated to confirm that our beloved Bob passed away today. He was everything to us and we want you to know how much he loved his fans, performing live and bringing people from all walks of life together with laughter,” read a family statement. “Though we ask for privacy at this time, we invite you to join us in remembering the love and laughter that Bob brought to the world.”

Dallas Cowboys running back and Atlanta Falcons coach that spent over 30 years in the NFL, Dan Reeves, tragically passed away at the age of 77 “due to complications from a long illness,” At-the-Buzzer reported. His death was announced on Jan. 1. In fact, Reeve’s death was one of the first reported celebrity deaths of 2022.

“Dan Reeves leaves a lasting legacy in our game as a player and coach. His track record of success in Dallas, Denver, New York, and Atlanta over several decades speaks for itself, marking a long and successful life and career in football,” Arthur M. Blank, Falcons owner, and chairman said in a statement.
